June 4, 2010
Seattle Picks was recently nominated for one of Seattle Weekly’s local “Best of the Web” awards. The winners will be chosen this month, and we could not be more proud. Our little baby girl (Seattle Picks) is growing up so fast! And truthfully, we absolutely, positively, totally, completely, could NOT do it without you. When we found out about the award, our first thought (after, “Is this for real???”) was about how amazing our readers and fans are.
Our hearts swelled with love and pride for everyone who reads us religiously every week, follows us on Twitter, friends us on facebook, takes our advice, and sends us sweet emails. Thank you for making Seattle Picks what it is, and for loving our baby as much as we do. Keep spreading the word… and the love! xoxo |

Love at First Bite
We grew up in a small town about an hour outside of Seattle. We know, it’s shocking—we haven’t always been “city” gals. But it all comes down to heart, doesn’t it? And our heart for this city makes up for living the first 18 years of our life without such wonderful options as designer handbags, peep-toe pumps, or ethnic food just around the corner. And for girls like us who love to eat, this last one is oh-so-important.
Our first introduction into the culinary world, upon moving to the big city, was Thai food. Our friends were shocked beyond belief that we’d never tasted the melding of familiar and exotic flavors and rushed us to Orrapin. There, it was truly love at first bite. Years later, it’s still our go-to place for insanely good Thai food. The menu is amazing, and the atmosphere is relaxed and elegant with hardwood floors and wooden carvings adorning the walls. We can’t even count how many times we’ve been there and we’ve never, ever been disappointed.
Take it from us country girls: Just one visit will spice up your life.

Roaring Twenties
We might have been flappers in another life—dancing all night with a glass of champagne and a long string of pearls, while wearing a fringed dress. It calls to us—so much more than “this life” scenarios of frizzy hair and a soggy fleece—especially in May.
Tavern Law might have given us a way to recreate some of that speakeasy feel. On a tip from a friend, we picked up the unmarked phone in the corner and inquired if they had room upstairs for two. We’re buzzed inside and discover a dimly lit hidey-hole of velvet settees, wavy old mirrors and unfinished wood floors that make us forget our less-than-glamorous attire. You won’t find a cocktail list—instead the bartender asks the flavors we prefer and whips up something different every time. On this particular evening, we sipped a smoothly blended concoction of gin, egg whites, lavender and sweet and sour.
The only thing missing was a long cigarette holder to twirl between our fingertips. And of course, that fringed dress and string of pearls.

It’s Time to Wax… Somewhere
Ever since our mothers introduced us to our first pair of tweezers, we reluctantly agreed that “no pain, no gain” really does apply. From work to the gym to making dinner to endless hours devoted to our flat iron, everything just seems to come out better when we push ourselves and sweat a little. The only caveat? Sweating is not our thing.
Thankfully, our good friends at The Wax Bar decided to do all the work for us and let us relax. After years of success in Ballard as the only spa with a liquor license, The Wax Bar mozeyed itself over to West Seattle. We toasted its entrance with a Corona (hey, we are at the beach, after all) and a personalized wax (you name it—The Wax Bar will yank it out for you). And trust us, ladies, waxing has never been more enjoyable than it is with a drink in hand, and a staff that so expertly does the job to perfection, every time!
The Wax Bar is bringing its bevies and beauties to West Seattle. And all we have to bring is our baby-soft skin.

The Center of Style
Our man prides himself on being able to wear things out in an astoundingly short amount of time, which is totally annoying. Most recently he popped the seams on our fourth set of throw pillows, but we didn’t complain, because we were poised and ready to pounce on the cool pillows we spied at Wabi Sabi.
Available in a tightly honed selection of modern and pretty eco-friendly fabrics, these style-centric accents are perfect for amping up anyone’s décor.

All Keyed Up
After we saw the stunning diamond skeleton keys from Tiffany, we felt faint with longing… and then our butts bounced back into reality. Scoring one of those jewel-encrusted beauties is about as likely as our fatty cat Sophie doing the cha-cha.
Good thing we found a sweet little key on Etsy to keep us from feeling deprived. It may not be loaded with bling, but it is plated in 24k gold, and at under $100, we can fathom purchasing it.

The One That We Want
We find the “shapes” ascribed to women’s bodies kind of weird, slightly annoying, and a little unflattering. Who the heck wants to admit they might be shaped like an apple? Luckily we have lines like Olivia Luca to help us embrace our shape in style.
This fully customizable bridal line aims to fit and flatter the whole fruit basket by allowing brides and maids to mix and match a huge assortment of cuts, styles, and fabrics for maximum wedding-day beauty.
