June 18, 2010
We caught up with an old friend we hadn’t seen in a while, and part of the reunion, naturally, involved a run-down of her latest dating disasters. She recently gave online dating a try, and we were practically peeing our pants with laughter at her stories. It had us wondering just what the heck is wrong with the other gender. There were guys who were “all about her” and then disappeared for months, only to pop up again and act as if nothing had happened. There were awkward guys, and guys who wouldn’t stop talking about themselves. Guys who set up dates and then went M.I.A., and plenty of guys with habits too weird to discuss here.
And then it hit us: Why can’t these guys just say “I’m just not that into you”? Why do they have to make up far-fetched and crazy excuses? Yes, women can sometimes be emotional, but we’re not going to fall apart when you say you “had a great time, but just aren’t feeling that spark.” Really, guys—you will earn a lot more cred if you just play it honestly. We aren’t buying the excuse that the FBI recruited you for a special undercover mission and you couldn’t call. C’mon! |

How Does Your Garden Grow?
Every spring we dream about starting a lush, aromatic, hummingbird-filled garden. Or at least buying fresh flowers every week. Don’t knock our baby steps—we were born with manicured thumbs, not green ones. This year, we got bold and thought some rosemary and basil might enhance the kitchen—and our meal-planning skills. Two weeks later, they were in the yard-waste bin.
Deciding to let someone a little more responsible take care of the cooking, we were on our way to the new Sitka & Spruce and happened upon the most darling flower shop—Marigold and Mint. Dainty peonies hooked us, strawberry plants threw out a line, and the buttercups were the sinker. Oh, it’s just so adorable! We swirled and swooned amid Marigold and Mint’s naturally scented soaps, handmade caramels, San Francisco chocolates, and lovely greeting cards till our infatuated little hearts remembered we were hungry. We somehow tore ourselves away from this garden wonderland and headed off to eat.
But we’ll be back. How could we not love a place that tempts us so? Just remember, don’t let the love-fern die.

Step Right Up!
We’ve always had a secret fascination with the circus. There is just something so terribly romantic and old-world about it. From the girls in sequins walking the tight rope to the ferocious lions and the guys who eat fire, fly on the trapeze and juggle, it’s such a lively and entertaining spectacle. (And yes, we secretly wish we could do some of those dare-devil stunts.)
So when we heard about the new show at Teatro ZinZanni, Maestro’s Menagerie, we high-tailed it down to the big top to see what the buzz was all about. The mesmerizing mélange of trickery and illusion had us captivated. There were trapeze artists, illusionists, contortionists, clowns, acrobats, jugglers, opera singers—everything you need for a good time. It’s total mayhem at the show, with plenty of magic and merriment, and we absolutely had the time of our lives.
Forget everything you thought you knew about the ho-hum, olde-tyme circus—this is the circus for the 21st century. And we promise: no scary clowns.

Do-Good Fashion
When we think of Seattle, we think of a vibrant, creative community that cares about the world. Just about everyone we know belongs to a non-profit organization and has an incredibly decorated array of artistic extra-curricular activities. The Emerald City is like a jewelry box, filled with fabulously talented gems. And we just met one precious jewel of a boutique down in Pioneer Square whose sparkle you’ll want to see for yourself.
Entering Karen’s Vintage Couture, we were greeted by a snugglishious Pug, a kaleidoscope of color, sequins and beading and a fresh feeling of inspiration and warmth. Karen, a life-long philanthropist and fashionista supreme (no, seriously, her ensembles are worthy of a spread in any glossy mag), sells dynamo designer vintage clothing to support multiple non-profit organizations. Want to shop for surprisingly affordable Chanel handbags and simultaneously support Ovarian and Breast Cancer Research? Um, yes please!
What’s sexier than a gal wearing pristine Louis Vuitton red-leather Mary Jane pumps? A gal that wears Louis Vuitton pumps and also gives back to the community. Karen’s Vintage Couture turns us shopping divas into donors!

Rethink Your Ink
For a while now, we’ve been thinking of getting a second tattoo… one of those 1940s “Sailor Jerry” hearts. But instead of reading “Mom,” it will read “Pork Chop,” after one of our Pugs. Too weird?
Maybe we’ll do something less permanent, like snapping up a few of these “Tattoo” tiles from modwalls. They’d be sooo cute as a sink backsplash in the bathroom. Or maybe we’ll frame a mirror with them and hang it in the guest room. Ahoy!

Bag Lady
We can schlep with the best of them, but nothing cramps our style like a tacky take-along bag. As local style icons (Oh haaa! We so wish! But we digress.), we feel like we need to represent, even when we’re loading up at TJ’s.
Our newest fixation? The funky/functional/foldable bags by Saky Sacks. The prints are totally of-the-moment, and they can easily carry up to 25 pounds of whatever you’re lugging around.

Here Comes the Sun
Just because it’s June-uary doesn’t mean you can’t bring a little sunshine into your home. We’re big fans of soy candles to do just that. A little glow + a little aromatherapy = a lot of happy. They’re perfectly genius for improving our mood.
These gorgeous hand-poured candles by Sydney Hale look chic and smell ah-may-zing. We’re thinking of stocking up to give as gifts if this crappy weather sticks around. Or maybe we’ll just hoard them for ourselves!
