The “Seattle Gray” that we live with 360 days a year (at least that’s what it feels like) sometimes clouds our memory of just how freakin awesome this city is in the summer. Last Saturday we had the perfect summer day: we grabbed one of our besties and hit the West Seattle Summer Fest.
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as we sauntered from booth to booth loving all of the amazing arts and crafts. We had ice cream cones dipped in sprinkles (who doesn’t love spinkles?), and capped the day off with an ice-cold beer, ahhhh.
So, Summer, we invite to you to come on in to our lovely city, get comfy, and don’t freak out if we lock the door behind you. |

A Little Arch Support
We’ve been feeling a bit frumpy lately, but we can’t figure out why. Our hair isn’t frizzy, we’ve been sporting the cutest summer fashions (hello, sunshine!), and our new tinted moisturizer keeps us dewy and flushed. So, what is it? Then we see the problem: Our eyebrows are atrocious! Not only have they lost their arch, but we over-plucked one brow in an attempt to handle the mess on our own. (Huge mistake!)
We hightailed it over to Salon Dewi, a peaceful haven in our eyebrow-challenged lives, for a solution. There were colorful pillows lining cushioned benches, a fountain trickling in the background, and Buddha statues on the wall. As we got comfy and browsed the menu of services, we saw everything from facials with aromatherapy to—could it be true—a Chocolate Massage? Heaven!
A half-hour later, our brows were perfectly arched. Our esthetician even fixed that horrible gap from our hack-job with the tweezers. Whew! We re-entered the world as a new woman. (With a new mission: Come back for that chocolate massage!)

New Neighborhood = New Restaurants
We just moved into a tiny bungalow about four blocks from Greenlake. There are boxes everywhere, and who knows where our kitchen gadgets are buried. The bad news is, two of the electrical outlets don’t work, and the bathroom door won’t close. The good news? Moving means take-out for dinner—always a good way to break in a new neighborhood.
We wandered three blocks and stumbled upon Krittika Noodles and Thai Cuisine. Everything looked so tempting! The noodle dishes, the curry…. wait, don’t we need an appetizer to help us decide what to order? Feeling adventurous, we chose Tod Mun—fish cakes mixed with spices and diced green beans. Suddenly realizing we were zonked from schlepping boxes all day, we took our order of Rad Na (wide rice noodles topped with broccoli, carrots, and delicious gravy) to go, and ate it straight from the box.
Sure, our new pad has a few glitches, but it’s three blocks from some of the best Thai food we’ve ever had. Now, where is our landlord’s number?

Child’s Play
Ok, we’ll admit it. We’re at that age where most of our friends are married or are getting married—you should see our summer wedding schedule! And now some of our childhood friends are having children of their own (where have the years gone!?!). In the last month we’ve been invited to four—count them… four—baby showers.
All of these events are making us tired of going to big-box-stores to pluck something off of a registry, so for the baby showers, at least, we’re going rogue. We hit up Izilla Toys and we were like—you guessed it—kids in a toy store. They recently opened a second shop in the Wallingford Center (the other is in Capitol Hill) and not only did we find some great gifts, we had fun shopping for our “inner-child” too. We fell in love with an all-natural “Spa Lab” we found, complete with a dozen spa products—where was that when we were little? If only we were 7 again.
At least at Izilla we get to pretend, right?

Oldie but A Goodie
We found a photo online of Cheryl Tiegs, circa 1976, and she looked so gorgeously sun-kissed, relaxed, and louche that we thought (for a moment) we could recreate that ourselves. Haaa! (In all seriousness. She’s Cheryl Freakin’ Tiegs!)
Anyhoo, these fabulous Piper sandals recall Malibu-colony beaches, Maryland boardwalks, and senior-high summers all at once. Piper perfected them in 1971, and haven’t looked back since. We love the Tan, but the Purple, Red and Green are poking our eyes out, too!

Reach a Place of Acceptance
We have a mild obsession lately with animal-themed art. It used to be just a tiny bookend to our ever-growing collection of local works, but now we’re in a full-fledged fauna fixation.
Nikki McFerrin’s Portland-based art just feeds the beast. Her adorable depictions combine whimsy, fantasy and humor to create wonderful pieces with incredible character. (She also creates inspired “Frida” pieces, but we can’t help but love “Queen Kitty,” even though we’re allergic to cats!)

No. 1 in Our Book
One of the perks of living in the Northwest is the outstanding array of locally produced spirits. And New Deal Distillery just rocked our world with their latest creation—Gin No. 3.
If you’re new to gin, this might be the perfect way to gain an education, since it’s great on its own and pairs sooo deliciously with your favorite mixers. If you’re already a gin-lover, well, you know what to do. Cheers!
