July 23, 2010
As teenagers our biggest summer worries were trying to catch the eye of our hottie neighbor, working on our tan, and finding the best parties. Now our neighbor is an elderly woman with too many cats, and our “tan” consists of going from blinding white to more of an eggshell white. It’s making us feel a bit moldy-old (cue the tiny violins). Since we’re too busy to take a real vacation this summer (the violins are getting louder), we’re trying to shake it up here at home. Our mission: To capture what’s left of summer—order fruity drinks with fancy names, try something new once a week (next is sea kayaking—wish us luck!), and splurge on a little retail therapy.
Here’s a little gift to pump up your summer! Forward this issue to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You’ll be entered to win a beautiful handcrafted heart cutout by PaperCutWorks Keep it, or give it to the one you heart. |

Fashion Forward
The very first time our mom let us start picking out our own clothes, we knew matching was important. The purse should team up with the shoes, and the accessories should tie it all together. So when it comes to putting ourselves together today, we still take good old mom’s advice to heart. With all that indie music and art we love here in Seattle, we need to dress the part.
Kudos to Velouria Boutique & Gallery for recognizing our needs, and making it easier for us to get all the hippest fashions for our home and for ourselves. They just opened a shop in Capitol Hill—a sister to their Ballard location. This light and airy space features beautiful indie designer goods and artwork—everything from greeting cards to hairpins and dresses. Charming photography lines the walls, and we had to nab a funky ocean shot for our living room!
There are quite a few options for the fashion-conscious man as well, so be sure to bring along that hipster-hottie you’ve been eyeing.

A Cut Above the Rest
We are always in the mood to update our look with a new, hot haircut. Sometimes we think we want edgy, sometimes traditional, sometimes even old-school (our favorite cut will always be “The Rachel”). We’re a little hair-manic, but we always just end up telling the stylist, “Please, make us look fabulous.” And one of the most fabulous places we’ve ever found is Gilt Edge Society in Belltown.
Gilt Edge Society is an artsy, boutique hair salon that has some serious cool-kid cred. Located in what used to be a secret speak-easy (seriously, there’s an old bar in the very back!), the salon features rotating artists and private parties, and the stylists at GES know how to be fabulous. More importantly, they know how to cut, color, condition, and create beautiful do’s for men and women. (We love our new cut—think “girl-next-door with a wild side.)
The stylists here are seriously sought after—from styling edgy musicians at the Warped Tour to being featured in “Tattoo Magazine.” Now that’s fabulous!

Romance in a Basket
Last week we decided to surprise our beau with a romantic picnic. We picked out the perfect sexy, summer dress, scouted out the most amazing spot… but came to a screeching halt when deciding what tantalizing treats to take. We knew we wanted chocolate-covered strawberries and wine, but what else? Thankfully, when we’re in a pinch, shopping always helps, and this time was no different. Off to Savour we went, and we’re oh-so-glad we did.
Imported cheeses, charcuterie, fine wines, chocolate (and lots of it!) and tapenades are just the tip of the iceberg at this foodie paradise. As you look deeper you’ll find artsy paper napkins, glassware, linens, recipe books, and exotic spices. It’s positively intoxicating. As if all that isn’t enough, they serve hand-made sandwiches and other delicatessen treats—the perfect cuisine for our evening adventure.
While we were there we also picked up a picnic basket set, complete with wine glasses and linen napkins. Our guy was so surprised he couldn’t stop smiling. Let’s just say the night was—ahem—a success.

Take Another Little Piece of My Heart
Whenever friends visit Seattle, they want a souvenir. Something that says “I was here” without being touristy or cheeseball. (e.g. T-shirts with jumping salmon on them; though we totally dig on those snow globes at the airport.)
These handmade hearts from PaperCutWorks are special enough to take home, even if you live here! Each one is cut from a vintage map of Seattle, and mounted on a wood block—a totally original way to remind you of the EmeraldCity.

Note to Self
If a super-cute card arrives in the mail, we can’t bring ourselves to part with it. We’ll tape it to the fridge, or pin it on the office corkboard. If it’s something very special,
maybe we’ll even frame it!
Hadley Hutton’s cards are absolutely worth framing. We love her girly take on birds and botanicals, the front and back designs, and the dreamy color-washed backgrounds. Pick up a few to send, but save one for yourself as a tiny piece of local-art heaven.

Want It, Want It, Want It
We were at a street fair in Portland a few weeks ago, and despite the lure of grilled corn and margaritas, we “somehow” managed to check out all the vendors. And of all the handmade items on display, what stopped us in our tracks? A collage.
It was whimsical and just plain wonderful, and Trinity Lee Designs had a whole array of sweet artworks that were begging to be taken home and adored. We especially loved the birds made of sheet music, as if they were singing. Color us smitten.
