life + style to you: every Friday
August 13, 2010

We’ve heard the gripes and grumbles that summer is going by way too fast, but we have to confess, we’re pretty excited about fall—giddy, really! It is our favorite season for a zillion reasons—the fashion; the rich colors (in clothes and in nature); the fashion; the television shows (our DVR is primed and ready to go); the fashion; the sports (Go Seahawks!); and oh, did we mention the fashion?

We have already started to drag out our sweaters (not that they ever get too far away from us in chilly Seattle) and dream about what we’re going to buy this season—more sweaters, of course, jeans that will make our butt look smaller (we can hope), wedge clogs (our new favorite splurge), and cozy jackets. Yes, fall, we are ready for you!

You’re One of a Kind

We like to think we’re unique. Sure we follow trends, and have nearly worn out our bootie sandals from wearing them so often, but we like to throw in an unexpected piece just to mix things up and make sure we stand out from the crowd. That’s what real style is all about, right?

Since we love original pieces, we often find ourselves at vintage shops and artsy boutiques vying for something that wasn’t in the pages of Vogue, but should have been. Our search recently led us to the Green Chair Project, an artists’ studio and gift shop. This place is packed with handcrafted treasures, from wearable art-like dresses, skirts, bags, and jewelry to perfumes, hand-bound notebooks, and vintage-inspired greeting cards.

The best part? Most of what they sell at The Green Chair Project community is recycled, sustainable, and locally made. So you can look good and do good at the same time. Not to mention handcrafted means one-of-a-kind, so we can keep catching eyes with our amazing style finds. Who doesn’t love that?

One, Two, Cha-Cha-Cha

Several years ago, we went on a life-changing trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina. We sipped maté, nibbled on regional cuisine, met fun locals, and we discovered the tango! Next to the colorful homes in La Boca we watched a dancing duo, stepping, swaying, twisting and turning in perfect, passionate rhythm to the accordion. We absolutely fell in love.

Back in Seattle, who would have thought that there is a thriving dance community in our own backyard? From salsa and tango to flamenco, Seattleites love to swing, shake, and shimmy, and Belltown Dance Studio is the perfect place for us to perfect our moves. They feature classes in Afro-Brazilian dance, cha cha cha, salsa, belly dance and much more to help us develop technique, style, and skills on the dance floor (and to impress our friends, of course). The award-winning instructors at Belltown Dance Studio offer workshops, group sessions, and private tutorials for all levels.

Argentina may have been the birthplace of the sultry, sexy tango, but Seattle is where it lives! Viva Belltown Dance Studio!

She’s Crafty

We’ve always known that nothing speaks from the heart like a handmade gift. Every magazine makes it look oh-so-easy—but judging from our inability to use a glue stick without getting everything sticky, we stick to our local boutiques when the gift-giving season comes around (nothing wrong with that, of course!).

This year we want to shake it up and put our creativity to the test—it’s about time we moved on from elbow-macaroni frames. To help make things personal, Assemble Gallery and Studio is here to spell out the meaning of Do-It-Yourself for us, and we are sew delighted! With both a shop and a studio, we can give craft-making a shot ourselves, or buy something made by an indie artist (and perhaps pawn it off as ours… don’t think we’re above doing that!).

Classes offered include knitting, sewing, printing, needle-work, book-binding, and quilting, and they’re all geared to be on the trendy side, so don’t be afraid that you’ll end up as the baloney in a granny sandwich when you get there.

It’s All About the Bag

When we were 8 years old, our dad took a trip to Vegas and brought us back a hot-blue purse that shimmered in the sunlight—we loved it immediately! Today, our style has mellowed a bit, but our fascination with fun handbags hasn’t.

Our latest love is the artful and whimsical handbag selection from ByJudianne. They come in fantastic colors and designs, and unlike some fabric bags, they are sturdy, durable, and stain-resistant. We want them all!

Sounds Delicious

We’re pretty sure at one point we’ve uttered the phrase, “We could bathe in cookie dough” because we just love it that much. Well, we may have found the next best thing—Bubble Bath Dough from Seattle-based Red Leaf.

This thick, creamy, bubbly goodness comes in yummy scents like vanilla buttercream, pink grapefruit, lavender, basil lime, orange sherbet, and even lettuce. (Who knew lettuce had a smell?) A decadent treat without the calories—yes, please!

Born to be Nerdy!

We have a new niece, so we’ve been buying up anything that screams cutesie and girly—that is until we found these self-proclaimed nerdy onesies by Katy and Zucchini. The one with the calculator that spells “boobies” made us bust out giggling (we’re really 12 years old at heart).

There are adult sizes for parents, or anyone else who want to release their inner geek. We got one for our niece and her mom—picture time!
