life + style to you: every Friday
August 20, 2010

We can’t deny it anymore—we are in dire need of a vacation! We knew long ago that we wouldn’t be able to get a break this summer. We put on a happy face and tried to live vicariously through our friends and family as they toured Europe, visited wine country, and went on cruises while we stayed at home with our cat (Tweet) who greets us every day by barfing up a gross hairball—glamorous!

Last weekend during the heat wave, while we were cleaning up Tweet’s latest “gift,” we cracked—it is time to get the heck outta here! We need to trade carpet cleaner for suntan lotion, stat!

Email us your ideas for a great getaway—and ummm, if you’re willing to cat-sit a lovely creature with a weak tummy, she’s all yours.

You’ve got Mail

We admit that we aren’t super tech-savvy. We can, of course, surf the Web, send email, cruise Facebook, and we know all about twitter. We also have some favorite online shopping sites, but sometimes we just want to hold something. We want to touch a silk dress, see a friend’s actual face, and open a real, honest-to-goodness letter

It seems that the art of letter-writing has moved the way of the Betamax. And frankly, we’re going to do everything in our power to stop it. Sure, emails and texts are nice, but they lack that certain je ne sais quoi that cards and handwritten letters have. So we headed of to the amazing Birch Paperie, which has—you guessed it—all sorts of stationery and cards for every occasion, personally designed and artfully presented. We adore everything this little shop has to offer; it’s definitely going to help us on our mission to bring letter-writing back!

When you start getting hordes of brilliantly worded cards and letters from your friends, we’ll know our work is done.

Va-Va-Va Voom

Like just about everyone else these days, we’re on a tight budget. To pinch a few pennies, we decided to try a home hair-coloring kit—majorly bad idea! The dye job, coupled with our already damaged hair (thank you, blow dryers and flat irons), looked like a science experiment gone wrong.

Thank goodness for Vol-ver Hair. It’s a little secret near Fremont that we happened to discover on one of our many dog walks. The interior is absolutely fabulous, with baskets of orchids and comfy leather couches. We felt right at home. After a careful assessment of the damage, our fried and over-colored locks were trimmed into sexy layers with side-sweeping bangs. We can even air-dry without looking like we were running late and forgot to do our hair—love it! And our dull hair color was transformed to a rich chocolate brown with caramel highlights.

The best part? A cut and color didn’t break the bank! Lesson learned—no more home dye-jobs. From now on we trust our look to the pros at Vol-Ver.

Secret Garden

We are unapologetic meat-eaters. To us, there are few things better than a perfectly cooked steak and a glass of wine. We have a few friends who are vegan, and when we first moved here they invited us to Café Flora for brunch. The food was good, but frankly we left with a very “eh” feeling—we missed our bacon and eggs.

Fast-forward eight years to last week when we were invited back, this time for drinks and apps. Holy s-bomb, we loved it! We sat on their new-ish garden patio—a little oasis full of plants and herbs—and had some of the best drinks of our lives! We tried (sipped, really) the Raspberry Lemon Drop, Classic Peach Daiquiri, Southern Sweet Tart (absolutely awesome!), Bullseye Ocho, and Blossoming Flora Bloody Mary. The food was also divine, especially the Yam Fries and Walla Walla Sweet Onion Rings.

We are so glad we decided to give Café Flora a second try—and we will gladly put our carnivorous ways on hold to keep coming back.

There's No Shame in This Game

Nookie happens. At least, that's what we're hoping for. As red-blooded, grown women, we proudly admit that we do, yes indeedy, get nakey with guys. And when it's time for lovin’, why shouldn't we be prepared?

This condom compact from Just in Case ensures that you're never at a loss for protection, and its ladylike looks keep your intentions on the d-lo (even if it falls out of your handbag). That kind of certainty makes having fun much more fun!

Drama Queen

In the tiny confines of our car, we are the biggest rock stars on the planet—in real life, not so much. We may not sound like a rock star, but thanks to jewelry designer Martha Driver, we can look like one.

Her Fall/Winter Collection of Rock Star Jewelry will hit stores next month and we are already drooling over “The Drama Mama” piece. We have the perfect outfit for it already. Rock on!

Sassy Sacks

We had a “What do you get the person who has everything?” moment while searching for a gift for a friend. She loves coffee and wine, but we couldn’t decide which to get her.

Then we spotted it… a wine bottle cover made from recycled coffee sacks by Coffee Purse. The bag we chose carried coffee beans from Peru. We paired it with a nice Pinot—the perfect way to feed both her addictions!
