October 1, 2010
Our last big birthday bash was for our 21st. That night we barely remember but will never forget ended with a call to the cops, being 86’d from a bar, and a lot of apology phone calls—oopsy! Since then we’ve kept a pretty low pro on our big day.
In fact, we almost forgot it was our birthday until we stepped on the Elliptical this morning. We typed in our weight (always traumatic!), but when it asked for our age we got oddly reflective. With one little push of an up arrow, we were no longer 32—the age when we bought our first home and our first brand-new car with the money we spent every waking minute saving. The age when we started to forgive ourselves for all the crazy things we did in our 20’s. The age when we realized we need to get out of our own way (this one is taking some time). Yeah, we like 32, so we decided to do what any red-blooded woman would do—we lied about our age. We have high hopes for 33, but our Elliptical can think we’re 32 for just a bit longer.
Our birthday treat for you: Forward this issue to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com, and you’ll be entered to win dinner for 2 at McCormick’s Fish House & Bar! (See the Hip Happenings below for a fun event at McCormick’s.) |

The Beauty of the Past
No matter how hard we try, by the end of the workday our makeup is faded and smudged, our clothes are wrinkled, and frankly, we’re just not very well put together. So when we wandered into Susan Wheeler’s vintage store down in historic Georgetown, it was like a breath of fresh air for our disheveled selves.
Susan Wheeler carries a variety of vintage jewelry, clothing, and furniture, and we instantly fell in love with a trio of 1920’s pearl and rhinestone necklaces that would spruce up our well-worn work cardigan and boring black pants. We imagine that women have had romances wearing the necklaces she carries, gone to gala balls in the evening gowns, and received suitors lounging on the velvet couches you’ll find while wandering through each charming aisle.
We never realized how much we needed some of the past to bring new life to our present. Now we just need a handsome beau… so we have an excuse to buy one of her evening gowns for a night at the opera.

All Bets on Seven
Our lucky number has always been seven, and there are so many reasons why—frankly, there are just so many great things associated with the number. For example: 7-11 (and their delicious Slurpees), the Seven Wonders of the World, the Seven Seas, Seven jeans… the list goes on and on! And one new addition to the list of why we love and trust our lucky number is Seven Salon in downtown Seattle.
Forget nails and spa services—Seven Salon is about serious cuts and color. They focus on suiting your bone structure and accentuating your eyes and skin tone, in a fun, high-energy atmosphere. Where other salons focus on relaxation, Seven Salon is all about revitalizing their clients through edgy and sophisticated cuts, live DJs spinning from open to close, a complimentary espresso bar and contemporary artwork.
So we’re ready to head off to Vegas (or maybe Snoqualmie for now) and put all our chips on lucky number seven. After, of course, a new cut and style from our new lucky salon.

Change of Plans
Ahhh, fall in Seattle. We are getting prepped to whip out our cozy cable-knit sweaters, cordovan leather side-satchel and newsboy caps, and drink pumpkin lattes as we longingly gaze out our windows at the fall foliage. We love the fact that for the next nine months we can ease up on the treadmill and our tans. Except for the fact that A) we just found out we’re headed to the Bahamas in two weeks, and B) Halloween is just a few weeks away. What is a girl to do?
Our answer: 30-minute Power Plate Pilates classes at Fremont Spine and Wellness. Where your average gym workout sesh is an hour and a half, the sophisticated structure of the Power Plate equipment enables us to achieve a core-strengthening, cellulite-reducing and metabolism- and circulation-improving experience in a third of the time—minus the stress and severity on the body. Results in two weeks? Sign us up!
Muscle tone? Check. Strength? Check. Confidence? Check. And just in time for our sexy Halloween costume (a bikini, natch)!

No Pain, All Gain
We’re a little older today. We’re not paranoid about getting wrinkles, but let’s be clear, we don’t welcome those little lines. That’s why we use Furlesse. We just put the transparent patch on, go to bed, and wake up with less-visible frown lines.
The patch is latex-free and hypoallergenic so there is absolutely no pain involved. Goodbye, Botox! Plus, we love that we can use it at night—it truly is a beauty sleep.

Think like a Queen
We carry a handbag that our mom had in the 70’s. We adore it, but it’s hanging by threads and super glue, requiring us to search for a new lover. After no luck, we were almost hopelessly despondent, but then we discovered the O-inducing purses by Queen Bee Creations.
They’re so amazing (and vegan) that we almost bought all of them, but we toned it down and settled on one … at least for now.

Make the Postman Blush
One should never underestimate the pick-me-up power of getting a surprise delivery in the mail. An unexpected “Thinking of You” card or little treat from a friend makes our whole day. So naturally, we find the idea of Panty by Post brilliant.
Get a monthly subscription of decadent French panties by Blush in the mail—once, six times, or every month for a year—your choice! What a fun, sexy surprise for you or a friend.
